I don't think it is super intricate, but it lends an atmosphere to the game that I think makes it more interesting. Even on the second playthrough, I really think these are excellent. However, I think the things I have always liked most about the game are the art and the music.
I am not sure if I have just been playing too many other, similar games recently that did it a bit better or if I am no longer practiced enough at HLD to really get in the "flow" (although, I actually found the game was much easier than I remembered).
The combat wasn't nearly as fun as I remembered. I LOVED it the first time, but on the second playthough I felt a little closer to how you do here. I played Hyper Light Drifter shortly after it came out and recently went back to play it again. I just feel like I could keep plugging on and beat this game, but it's just a slog, dull, and I'm not getting any enjoyment out of continuing. I bought HLD thinking it'd be right up my alley. The game is pretty at least, and I love the pixel art of it, but the plot feels empty, and leaves me with no motivation to dig further.Īnd let's not get started on the random "take control away from the player while the protagonist has another 'dying but not really' fit." Show don't tell works normally, but there's so little here that I just don't care. The laser is good, but all the guns are hard to aim because you can't just sit still in the heat of combat.ĭashing is neat, but the timing factor on multi-dash makes it pointless and frustrating most of the time. "Sorry, this isn't a button masher but here's 30 enemies on a small screen area hope you took the right skills." Shotgun was a nice touch, but it's too weak unless you're literally touching the enemy's sprite. I traveled a bit south, then west through the teleport base and through a bit, but the game is just frustrating and rather dull.Ĭombat feels bland. and I'm just not interested in continuing. I put 5 hours into Hyper Light Drifter, completed the north and east areas.
